Scholarships:
The Alpha Alpha Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International awards scholarships to area college students who are either junior or seniors and are working toward a degree in education. These scholarships have been awarded by this chapter for many years.
To obtain the funds for these scholarships, the chapter has an annual scholarship luncheon in November. At the luncheon a Chinese raffle, a silent auction and an out loud auction are held. Members donate items for the raffle and the auctions. Also, some area businesses donate items.
Scholarships are awarded during a spring meeting which is attended by the students who will be getting the scholarship.
This is a much anticipated event for the chapter. Besides raising funds for the scholarships, members have the opportunity to bring potential members to the luncheon so that they can learn more about Delta Kappa Gamma.
Mini-Grants
In an effort to support Delta Kappa Gamma’s SEE initiative (Supporting Early Educators), the Alpha Alpha Chapter is offering mini grants to early educators.
The mini grants are offered to teachers in Ashtabula County who have between one and four years of experience. These $200 grants can help a teacher with a creative project which may need some extra resources or can even be used for a teacher to participate in a workshop that will enhance their teaching skills and enrich their classroom.
The applications are distributed in mid-August and are due in September. A committee reviews the applications, taking into account creativity, benefit to students, and student engagement in selecting mini grants to fund. In the spring, teachers who have received a mini grant are invited to a meeting to give a brief report of how they used the funds and what effect the mini grant had on their students.
